My fiance *really* wants to go there. Not being Islamic, is it ok for me (white girl w/red hair) to wander around head uncovered with shorts/pants? Or would I be getting the taboo stare there?

No problem whatsoever. There are plenty of western tourists, and plenty of Malaysians who are not Muslim. You are not expected to cover your head if you are not Muslim.

Hi Gary - I loved Malaysia. KL is such a wonderful harmonious place to visit. Being a blonde white girl, I did get a few stares, but it gave me a better appreciation for how others might feel when they visit where I live. I can't wait to read more about the rest of your visit. Did you get a chance to visit Kota Kinabalu?

The Malaysians are quite tolerant of different faiths. They're just not tolerant of Muslims trying to convert to other faiths.

I was in KK back in January.

I was impressed by the consumption of dark beers in KL and Indonesia. They brew their own version of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout and you can also find Panther Stout, Gold Jaguar Stout, Gold Lion Stout, etc. Not many countries in that part of the world love to drink stout beers, let alone old ladies on the street on a hot day in KL.

an old friend of mine started a debate league there. now he's in the sudan doing the same thing.

I stayed in the same area a few weeks ago--just across from Times Square. It's a bit noisy at night...we had to switch to a higher floor after the first night. I enjoyed the few days in KL, but Malacca and Penang were much better locations for me.

Dood - sounds like you had a PURGE! Not all bad, and something that is actually going to help you get more immune to the various bugs around the world. The only bummer is the time spent off your feet. Glad that you came through. Take good care on your travels and be careful with street food! The rest of your mainland SE Asian tour is going to befun to hear about! Expect the unexpected.

    Cheers!
